Kindness To Parents
Authoobillahi mina shaytani rajeem
Bismillahi rahmaani raheem
Your lord has ordered you that you should not worship anything except Him. And treat your parents kindly. When either of them or both of them reach old age, never say to them “uff” or turn them away. Speak to them gently and show them respect with your actions and say “Allahummah Rabbirhamhumaa kamaa rabbayaani saghiraa” meaning Oh Allah, have mercy on them as they took care of me when I was a little child. [al isra'a (17:23-24)]
The verses which we read from the Quran shows us how important it is for us to respect and to take care of our parents. We would like to talk about some of the words which need to be explained. For example saying “uff” means we should not make a noise or show that we are unhappy when they make suggestions or ask anything from us.When our parents grow to an old age, they become forgetful, they do mistakes and they sometimes seem grumpy and don't see things the way we do. So when this happens to us, our rabb has ordered us not to say to them “uff” meaning not for us to show them our resentment. It is our responsibility to serve them as they had looked after us when we were small. When we couldn't move, or go to the cupboard or fridge to get something to eat. When we were totally dependent on them for everything. They would leave their sleep to look after us through the night. They become restless when we are sick.
Whatever good we do to them cannot be equal to their good which they have done for us. So we should never think that we have done enough good deeds towards them. One hadeeth reminds us of this:
Abdullah ibn Umar(ra) said he saw a man holding his mother on his shoulders doing ta'waf (circling round the ka'ba) He didn't complain, and he was happy. The man said, “Oh ibn Umar, do you think by my actions I have done a great good to my mother?” Ibn Umar said, “No, your good is not equal to a single pain that she suffered when she was giving you birth but still you are doing very good and Allah will give you a great reward for the good you are doing.”
We should remember when it comes to fulfilling our responsibilities towards others the following hadeeth:
It was narrated by Abu Hurayrah(ra) that a man came to the Prophet(saw) and asked him: 'Who is most deserving of my close companionship?' He(saw) replied: “Your mother; your mother; your mother; then your father; then the next closest to you in kinship; then the one next closest.”
Let us pray to Allaah that we do our best to respect our parents, honour them, be kind to them, help them and make them happy with us so that we may get the reward from Allah the lord of the worlds.
O Allaah! Accept our humble prayers and make us obedient slaves to You.
O Allaah! Help us to be respectful children to our parents. Aameen
